"The reasons for my travel were never explained to me. I had no idea where I was going, why I was leaving… The people that we left behind were impossible for us to have contact with. We didn’t know anything, not even how far we were from Gjoa Haven, where we came from."

Alice Aglukkaq

In the 1940s, the federal government began flying Inuit from their homes to hospitals for treatment for tuberculosis. Inuit from Kitikmeot region were usually taken to a sanatorium in Edmonton, often for several years. Alice Aglukkaq spent seven years in a Edmonton while awaiting treatment for TB. She describes that experience here in detail.
